Carrie Underwood Returning to ‘Sunday Night Football’ on NBC

Almost lost in Carrie Underwood‘s admission that she didn’t get her husband a birthday gift and that she likes hockey fights was Monday’s announcement that the singer is returning to Sunday Night Football.

Underwood joined the first intermission broadcast crew during Monday’s NHL Stanley Cup Finals game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Nashville Predators. During the convo she admitted to not buying husband and Preds captain Mike Fisher a present for his birthday (June 5) because they’d planned to wait to celebrate until after the Cup. She also said she doesn’t mind hockey fights because Fisher can hold his own.

When her appearance was over, the network shared that Underwood was returning to Sunday Night Football on NBC this fall. It’s her fifth straight year filming the open to the weekly Sunday night football game. Originally the song was a remake of Joan Jett‘s “I Hate Myself for Loving You,” but last season that song was replaced with a spin on Underwood’s own “Somethin’ Bad.” The new song became “Oh, Sunday Night.”

While she’s been laying low professionally in 2017, Underwood has been everywhere during Fisher’s teams push for Nashville’s first Stanley Cup. She was the first country celebrity to sing the National Anthem prior to a home playoff game, a tradition that has led to a nearly undefeated home record during the playoffs. Dierks Bentley sang the Preds to victory on Monday night (June 5).

Earlier on Monday, ESPN announced that Hank Williams Jr. would return with “Are You Ready for Some Football?” to open Monday Night Football. He was banished for six years after comparing President Obama to Hitler.
