Legendary Texas Tech head football coach Spike Dykes has passed away at the age of 79. According the Lubbock Avalanche Journal, Dykes passed away early Monday morning due to heart attack.

Spike Dykes held the record for the most wins by head coach at TTU until 2009. Began he is coaching career at Texas Tech in 1984 as an assistant. He took over the head coaching position in 1986 just before the Independence Bowl. From there he would go one to win 85 games as head coach. He would hold the record for most wins as a head coach until 2009. He retired at the end of the 1999 season.

Services will be held for Spike Dykes in Lubbock on Thursday at 2pm at First United Methodist Church and on Friday in Horseshoe Bay.
