Watch Clay Walker Celebrate Fan Who Beat Cancer in Concert
Longtime Clay Walker fans Cliff and Jessica Wilder will be telling this story for years to come. At a recent show, the two shared an incredibly special moment thanks to the country star.
As high school sweethearts, the Wilders listened to Walker's "This Woman and This Man" on their first date, in 1994; the song also served as the soundtrack to their first dance at their wedding. Hearing a song with that much meaning behind it is always one of the best moments of a concert, but this particular time -- well, it was on a whole other level.
The Wilders, who live in Middlesex, N.C., were at Walker's recent show in Biloxi, Miss., to celebrate the fact that, on March 9, Jessica Wilder had completed her final radiation treatment and beat breast cancer. She had been diagnosed with the disease in 2015, and the couple took a week-long getaway, including Walker's concert, to toast to her strength and success.
At the show, Cliff Wilder donned a "checklist" T-shirt that included three "to-do" items: "finish chemo," "finish radiation" and "see Clay Walker sing "This Woman and This Man."" Walker grabbed a Sharpie and personally checked off the final box before singing the Wilders' song.
“You will never know how special the moment was for my wife. She didn’t know anything about the shirt until he actually sang "This Woman and This Man" because I had a shirt over it, and all I wanted was to surprise her and maybe get a thumbs up or something from Clay Walker," Cliff Wilder tells Taste of Country. "Not in my wildest dreams would I have ever thought it would have turned into this. I still can’t watch the video without crying ... It was a night [Jessica] deserved and will never forget."
Adds Walker, "Moments like this, that I shared with Cliff and Jessica, is why we as entertainers do what we do. I will never forget the absolute joy on their faces and being a part of something so wonderful in their lives."
